High Temperature for Pentium 4 3.06 GHz

Query 1:
================
We have 4 machines with 3.06 GHz P4 with Intel D865VHZ M/B, 1 GB
Kingstone RAM and Fedora Core 3 installed in them. This morning I
noticed the OS is reporting temperature "too high" in the login
console. I rebooted the machine and tried to investigate via BIOS
software. I found the following for three of them:

Server Processor System Zone 1 System Zone 2
Server1 84°C/183°F 41°C/105°F Sensor Not Available
Server2 54°C/129°F 37°C/98°F Sensor Not Available
Server3 63°C/145°F 40°C/104°F 46°C/114°F

Is this something to be aware of?

Query 2:
================
Since we are running Linux, is there a software for Linux which can
monitor the temperature?

Thanks in advance.

Server 1 and 3 are overheating.
Improve the airflow in the casing and double check whether the CPU(s)
were properly sitted.

yes

why would you wonder if overheating is something to be aware
of?

Zone 1 is CPU temp? Zone 2 is Motherboard temp? Just curious, because that
fits the trend..)

If it helps heres my temps. CPU 95F and MB 80F. P3 tho, my P4 is suffering
from memory failure. It runs hotter, tho when its not down, its real cold
now. HA! Are you using the default fan Intel shipped? If the heatsinks
have dust on them, they don't work as well.

I took all my heatsinks out and put premium thermal goo in. I don't
recommend that if you care about a warranty and service, as that voids it.
But if you knocked it, seperating the gluelike seal between chip and
heatsink, temps will rise fast.

Can't help ya on Query 2.

I was not sure about the definition of overheat as far as P4s are
concerned, perhaps I should have rephrased the question.

Thanks anway.

Most probably no - since the AMI BIOS software shows Processor
temperatures separately. My guess would be Zone 1 is different
temperature diod installed in a different section on M/B.

I am using the same default fan and they do not have dust on them - all
the machines are only 1.5 months old.

A utility called MBM (Motherboard Monitor) reports zone 1 as MB temp
and zone 2 as CPU temp.

My son has a 3 GHz P4 and the Retail Box cooler was inadequate when he
did video file conversions. So he bought a Zalman 7700 copper cooler.

He had the supplier put the new heatsink on with silver goo.

I looked up the Intel spec for the 3 GHz P4 Prescott core and it was
75C IIRC. Your MB should be fussing if it overheats.

I'm running a Zalman, aswell. You might wanna visit
http://www.zalmanusa.com/usa/usa_index.asp. It shows mounting instructions
there as well as other models if the 7700 is too big.

I mail ordered a syringe full of the goo. A dab will do you.. hehe!

Bob, that's some crazy link in your signiture. I wonder how many Florida
ballet counters it would take to recount all those counties.

My son had Directron put it on. No way he was going to void the
warranty.

The votes in Florida were counted and recounted so many times that it
is no longer possible that Bush lost. Even the Democrats conceded that
he won.
