High pitched noise

On certain websites, I can hear a barely audible high pitched noise eminating
from somewhere inside my laptop - I own a Dell Inspiron 1100 w/XP Home, 20g
HD. I do not hear it on the Google home page. But I do hear it on many other
webpages. Especially those running some sort of flash or active content. I
can live with it but it's super annoying!

Any help would me most appreciated!

You should probably ask Dell, but I'll take a stab at it.

Perhaps you are like me: When I was younger I could hear higher frequency
sounds than most people. For example, the radar beacons on a cruise ship
used to bother me. I remember being on a tour at the border of Lebanon and
Israel, where there's plenty of radar, and I had to hide in a cave.

It isn't that much of a problem now that I'm older (although by no means am
I 'old'), but I can still hear high-pitched sounds easily, and one of those
is the harmonic that one of my hard disks makes as it spins inside my
(desktop) case. I'm sure that in my younger days I would have returned the
hard disk, but now I can usually ignore it.

So here's my guess: You're sensitive to the sound your hard disk makes as it
spins, and it speeds up as it writes and reads the temporary internet files
that animate active content.
