Hiding Index XE marks

How do I get the index marks, i.e. "{ XE "xxx" }, to hide when I click on the
show/hide button with the paragraph mark?
 
On the View tab of Tools | Options, clear the check box for "Hidden text."

In Tools > Options > View, make sure the box for Hidden text is not checked.

The ¶ button only toggles the value of the All box in that dialog. If the
All box is cleared but the Hidden box is still checked, then Hidden text
(including the XE fields) will still be visible.
