Hiding field codes in Word 2003

I wish to use Word 2003 in conjunction with End Note (a citation manager).
When I insert a citation I get about a quarter page of field code. This does
not print out nor is it visible when I look at the document in print preview.
But alas, I can't work in print preview. In earlier versions of Word I
would have gone to tools/options/field code or hidden text. But Tools in
Word 2003 (at least in my version) does not have "options". Clicking on the
"hidden text" box in format/font doesn't help either. Any suggestions will
be appreciated.

The Tools menu certainly should have an Options item.

Do you perhaps have "personalized" menus turned on? Is there a
downward-pointing chevron at the bottom of the menu? If so, click it
to see the rest of the menu items. Also go to Tools > Customize >
Options and check "Always show full menus" to stop that behavior.

If that isn't the problem, the Tools menu might have been
(deliberately or accidentally) modified. See
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/RestoreMenuCmd.htm.

Hi Jay,
Thanks for your comments. I looked into them and they did not address
my problem. Your statement that I should indeed have the Tools/option menu
answered an important query for me. So I re-installed-repaired my Office
installation. But I still don't have the "option" in the drop down tools
menu. My installations have been from a CD -- an upgrade CD originally
purchased 02/28/2005. Is it possible I received a faulty copy of the
upgrade? Is there some way to get a second upgrade -- perhaps over the
Internet? I look forward to your thoughts.

I'll repeat Suzanne's request.

Also, please take into account these facts:

- The settings that are involved in this problem are stored in the
Normal.dot template, which is not replaced by reinstalling Word, so
reinstallation cannot fix it.

- If Word thinks you customized the menu, doing a repair won't change
that, so a repair is also useless.

- The probability is just about zero that a copy of the Word installer
is "faulty" only to the extent that one menu item is missing, but
everything else works. I can't imagine any mechanism that could cause
that.
