hidden icons don't hide

New notebook computer with WinXP home. By default icons in tray area was set
to hide. And indeed this worked for a while. Now a couple of weeks later the
icons refuse to hide. The little arrow thingy is not there and all icons (7)
are visible. I've tried to manually turn this off and then back on but they
remain visible. I checked the registry entry and it is set for them to be
hidden. Any thoughts about this?
