hidden files and dbx

Why does Microsoft have hidden files and what is a .dbx
file extension? I am trying to save some e-mail messages.
They seem to reside in a .dbx file.

because Microsoft tries to save you from your self.

That's what they are. DBX is the database file that
Outlook express uses for it's messages.
