Hidden file, 'unknown extension'

Hi. When I unchecked 'Hide Protected Operating System Files' in Folder Options, a file appeared on my desktop with an unknown file extension.
It is 0 bytes but I can't delete it even in Safe Mode. I can open it in Notepad which asked me if I wanted to change the file. How do I do that in Notepad? Thanks folks. deango

Wes. The name that shows in Properties is 'Kiss My......(just the dots, no other word, and no extension. Location is: Documents and Settings/My Name/Desktop. I have run a complete test with AVG anti-virus, Spybot, Spyware Blaster and HijackThis. Nothing shows up anywhere. I can change the file to anything I want in Notepad, it just creates a new file and leaves the old one with no extension on the desktop. Anyone got any ideas how to deal with this? Thanks. dengo

dengo,

The [[Kiss My......]] looks like a dead give away for scumware.

Does AVG have the latest updates?

AVG Free Edition
Version: 7.0.300
Virus base: 265.7.5
Release date: 1/26/2005

SpywareBlaster won't help after you already have something.

Update Spybot S & D and run it again.

Spybot - Search & Destroy
version: 1.3.0.12
Latest detection update: 2005-01-06

HijackThis
Version: 1.99.0.0

You might want to try Ad-Aware also...
Download, install, run, update and run again.

Ad-aware SE Personal
http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

You can try to rename the Kiss My file. Don't open the file...
Right click the file | Select: Rename | Type: aaa.txt | Left click the
Desktop or hit the Enter key | Answer: YES to Are you sure you want to
change it?|

Providing that you can rename the file.

Wes. Have all the latest versions of everything, including AdAware. Could not rename the file. Dialog box says "Cannot rename: Cannot read from the source or file disk". It is not a desktop.ini file.
Checked Kelly's suggestion for 'googling', but nothing there applies, even re-worded. Am trying a Computer Help site.
One thing. I downloaded a firmware update for my CD drive from one of those sites that want you to buy their driver tool. Anyway, the update flashed my bios and blew my CD drive. Thanks. deango
