Using the hibernating feature, and when switching back
on, the computer is having problems with coming out of
hibernation and the message reads that it is unable to
find the hibernation file that it created at shut down.

Due to having this problem for a while, I would like to
reinstall the basic system files. My question is; Is there
a method using the original installation disk to re-install
the system files without loosing any programs or files.
(Instead of a complete re-format)

Many thanks for any suggestions...

First try disabling the hibernate and reenabling it :
Control Panel > Power Options
Hibernate tab > Untick "Enable"
Click OK

To make sure the file is gone -
Click Start > Run > CMD > Type :
del /f /as \hiberfil.sys

Now reenable hibernation from Power Options and see if hibernation works. If not then
run the following from Start\Run to run System File Checker :
SFC /ScanNow

Good Luck, Ayush.

Command prompt >> sfc /scannow
Have the XP CD inserted. (not available with some OEMs)

Thanks for your suggestions.
Un-ticked and re-ticked hibernation with same result.
Ran sfc /scannow with winxp/sp2 disk installed.
The installed disk wanted to perform functions and selected <exit.
Run <sfc /scannow and was unable to find the installation disk.
Repeatedly pressed "Retry" with same result.

Would by selecting "Upgrade" from the installation disk
perform similar function or would I loose data?

Many thanks for you inputs...

Ran sfc /scannow with winxp/sp2 disk installed.
Ran <sfc /scannow and was it was unable to find the installation disk.
Repeatedly pressed "Retry" still couln't find the disk in d: drive.

The installation cd dick gave me the welcome screen to install winxp
and exited out of it. Shows the computer recognized the disk ok.

Any suggestions please...

Great web page with good information on running scannow sfc.

Ran the program, took about 10 to 15 minutes and re-booted the
computer

Hibernated the computer and re-started, received the message:
"Delete Restoration Data & Proceed to System Boot Menu"
Selecting this, the computer re-starts as a cold boot.

Unchecked Hibernate, rebooted, re-selected Hibernate, re-booted.

Tried Hibernating again with same error message.

Will appreciate any help please.

Many thanks...
