When I select hibernation on my pc (running xp media edition) it goes into
stansby instead. Does anyone know how I can fix the problem?

well, since your computer
can use standby mode, then
this is a positive because your
motherboard supports special
power features.

the first thing is to make
sure your power control
panel settings are set to
hibernation only and not
standby.

then the hibernation will
occur automatically with
the time you set to engage
it or

when you initiate a shut
down via the start button
you can press the shift key
and the standby option will
change to hibernation "or"

create a new short cut on
the desktop and one for your
quick launch toolbar and
copy and paste the command
below into the "location of
item: field:

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll, SetSuspendState m2

Hi Rob

My power management settings are set for hibernate and not standby. However,
when I go to turn off my computer, I am offered several options on the
screen. They include a button for Restart, Shutdown, Standby and Hibernate.
When I manually select hibernate, the computer appears to hibernate (it says
it's doing it with the words 'hibernating'). However, a sight movement of the
mouse wakes it up again. This indicates that the pc didn't hibernate when I
asked it to but instead it went into standby.

Does your shortcut solution still apply? Or is there something I need to
change in the BIOS?

not to sure....

the hibernation power setting
is a very helpful feature. however,
it is a pain in the b*tt when it fails
because there are a multitude of
variables that can interfere with it,
like third party drivers. if i am
not mistaken the microsoft intelli
mouse has the ability to wake up
a computer as well. but i have no
experience with a mouse like this.

then there is that unknown variable
if hibernation had ever functioned
for you but recently began to fail.
thus this would imply that something
corrupted the windows power
feature. (if this is the case then a
system restore or a repair install
may be the fix you need)

-------------

many bios have power configuration
modes. for example there is the
feature called "wake on lan".

with this feature, a computer can
be awakened remotely via the lan/
network connection.

another possibility may be
manufacturer hardware drivers
like those specially designed
for laptops.

a hardware configuration program
can pre program the laptop buttons
and the lid.

for example, windows can be sent
into hibernation when the lid is simply
closed or by pressing the power button.

what might help is to open
a command window, via
start>run>cmd

by using the command: powercfg
you will get more information.

at the prompt type powercfg/help
then press enter. as you will see
there will be a multitude of variables
provided for power configuration
command.

try this command and see if
standby is listed: powercfg/query

there are other commands you
can run as well, just scroll through
the listing.

if anything above seems to suggest
something, let us know so that we
can perhaps focus on it.

Hi

My pc is only 8 months old and Hibernate has never worked. However, I will
try some of the things you suggest. Thank you for taking the time to help me
with my problem.

It seesm to me that power goes off. I don't touch the mouse beforeit goes

Have you checked your motherboard to see if any setting is required for
hibernation?
