Hibernation fails

I have an ongoing problem with XP Home not hibernating. "Screen Saver>>Power"
is set to hibernate (time-out set and Enable Hibernation checked), but the
system remains active. I am up-to-date on all patches so far as I know.

It originally occurred on only on user, usually with IE6 up but not doing
anything. Then I noticed that power saving could be set system-wide from the
control panel and set it to "Home/Office Desk". Since then, the problem has
been occurring on all users sporadically, on user X consistently. There is
no question of lack of resources; I usually leave the system up with no apps
running.

You probably have a program or task/service of some kind running in the
background. Hijack this is very good at listing everything on a system, not
only malware. I assume you have turned hibernate off rebooted and turned it
back on.

Thank you very much, I hadn't thought of using HijackThis.

There was just one extra process in the state where hibernation failed,
ntvdm.exe (DOS/16-bit emulator). When I removed that, hibernation occurred
as scheduled. It was being loaded by an older game that I downloaded
recently.

There may be other sources of the problem, but now I know how to diagnose
them -- thank you once again.
