After installing service pack 1 my machine started going
into hibernation. It is not set to hibernate! The power
management is set NOT to allow hibernation! I don't know
how to stop it... Any thoughts would be greatly
appreciated... Thank You Ron Elwood

This may be a dumb question, but are you sure it's hibernating, not going
into standby. When does it hibernate?

I don't know how long it runs unattended before going
into hibernation, but I would guess at least 2 or 3
hours. and yes, I am sure about the hibernation.. no
fans running... not a sound... punch the on button that
is slowly flashing and bingo.. you are right back where
you were, open programs and all... It's not too much of
a problem, accept I've always understood that it's harder
on a computer to keep turning it on and off rather than
leaving it run... and hibernation seems to be completely
shut off... Thanks for taking time to respond... Best
regards, Ron Elwood PS I got an email from microsoft
that would not open... I think someone might have been
trying to help...

Are you saying that you put your REAL email address on this forum?
With all the viruses out there?
Are you nuts?
Do not open "Microsoft" email!

After you described your symptoms, I can tell you it's not hibernation. If
your power button is slowly blinking, it's standby. And when you press it,
your desktop appears. With hibernation, you computer would be completely off
(no blinking button), and when you pressed the power button it would say
"Resuming..." with a bar going across, and then your desktop would appear.

To fix your problem, go to Control Panel and double click "Power Options".
Where it says "System Standby", there a drop-down list next to it, select
"Never" from the list, and also select "Never" on the hibernate list if it's
there. Your problem should be fixed.

Dana, it's all right to use your real email address, just mask it like I
did. Take a look at what I did and you will see.

I got the impression Ron thought someone on this forum sent him what may
well have been SWEN. He sounded rather oblivious to the potential threat, I
thought, didn't know whether to laugh or cry:

That's standby. With my old Win98 computer you could hear the fans
blasting away from the next room, but the new one just blinks. The
first day I got it, at one point I pressed ear to the case because I
couldn't figure out what the heck was happening... or wasn't.

What is the problem, again? The description seems to have become lost.
