hiberate option disappeared???

I've had my T42 Thinkpad with Windows XP-Pro for two months. Everything was
going great until all of a sudden I no longer had the Hibernate or Standby
options when I go to shut down. They just disappeared. I always have
several applications running simultaneoulsy and use Hibernate and Standby
often -- it saves me a lot of time and it's a necessary feature.

I called IBM support and they had me find a Restore Point when Hiberate last
worked. I did that and it worked, except now when I actually do want to
shutdown or restart, Hibernate again is no longer option after re-starting
up??? Not to mention, everytime I use restore to get the Hibernate feature
back in action, I subsequently have to re-install software like my wireless
print server and other stuff. It's a real pain in the ass!

Is it possible that SP2 or some other recommended MS update caused this
problem?

Please help me get Hibernate back. Thanks. Tom

dear trisci:
i also had the same thing happen to me on my dell desktop, only six months
old, however some dell applications on their cd had a spyware on it, and
after two reinstalls, using the dell applications allowed the spyware to
reinstall each time. after the first reinstall (to kill the viruses and
spyware) i noticed the missing hibernate and standby gone as well. since
dell produced the operating system software as well as the other software on
my computer, i now have all kinds of spyware and adware on here utilizing
all my resources, and the damned thing has reset my security settings so i
can't operate anything, i.e. download any software to remove the
adware/spyware....and other problems too. did you get any response from
newsgroup as to how to fix your problem?

Ramesh,

Thanks for the link, but I am not a technician and need more help to fix
this problem. I reviewed the link and here is what I can you:

1) My system used to offer hibernate and now it does not.
2) I have added hardware and updated to SP2, which I assume updated some
device drivers and possibly caused this problem in the first place.
3) It tells me that "there are no new drivers"
4) I do not understand any of the troubleshooting/diagnostic stuff, so that
is not much help at this point.

Can't MS run some kind of remote diagnostic on my machine to: a) identify
the problem and b) resolve it. Again, I am not a technician nor do I have
countless hours to deal with what should be an easy fix. Please help.

Hi Roslyn,

Yes, I did get a response, but so far I have not found out how to fix this
problem.

Bill Gates has everything and all I want is my Hibernate back!!!

Tom,

You may be correct. Which drivers did you install after creating the Restore
Point. Try rolling back a driver via Device Manager, or look for an updated
version from the device manufacturer's site.
