Here's a first I believe

I just performed a boot time defrag using PerfectDisk 8.0 (build
46 -latest). During the defrag the system issued a crash dump.

Now when I start up, the computer goes through a successful P.O.S.T.

I then get a message (white on black) that states: The file is possibly
corrupt. The file header checksum does not match the computed checksum.

That's it. Nothing more. The system halts at this point.

I am going to try a system restore by booting up from the DVD. If that
doesn't work it will be a full system restore from the full system backup I
made a couple of days ago.

Hi Richard,

I'd suspect the partition table is corrupt if you're getting past POST and
not getting to the point of loading Vista, so the master boot program
doesn't know where the active (or any) partition is located, but it could
also be winload or the boot configuration data if it's getting past this
point and the table is indeed ok. It all happens pretty rapidly normally.
I'd boot something like BartPE or Knoppix and see if it can read the disk.

Richard,
Hope I didn't get it all mad by discussing defrag -b with you.
jk
but seriously,
that stinks,
at least you made a backup.

Based upon what has happened to you, I may well hold off installing Perfect
Disk. relying on the rather vague Vista Defrag for now..

That is odd, Richard. I bought PD8 last night. Ran it on
two computers and did the boot-time defrag, too- no problems
on either computer. When I was testing their beta, on my laptop-
boot-time defrag wouldn't work. Just didn't do anything. But, it
never caused a problem like that.

If that doesn't work, try a Startup Repair. But you're going to find
despite Jim Allchin's ecstatic blogging on it, that it does not work a
significant percent of the time compared with the more successful Repair
Install in XP and if you didn't have a DVD like most of the hundreds of
millions of projected preinstalled buyers because MSFT"s Scott Di Valerio
OEM VP doesn't want them shipped you don't have a DVD you are out of luck
there.

If that doesn't work exaust using system restore in all of the 4 Win
Advanced Options Safe Modes, and then try LKG.

Have been using the PD trial in Vista builds for about 2-3 months in two
previous builds before RTM including 5480 and boot time defrag and works
great. But I don't know of a big series of tests with it. If you contact
perfect disk they could give you data for sure and they have tood tech
support and are easy to contact.

I have started using PD8 for Vista. I did a boot time defrag, including the
page file, without incident. But a user needs to make sure they are using
the Vista version and not XP. Diskeeper 10 for Vista is due for release
before Launch.

Could the user have downloaded the XP version instead of the Vista one? Is
that possible on the PD website?

I tried to perform a repair 4-5 times, booting from the DVD. I didn't think
that the SATA drivers were being installed because it wasn't picking up the
operating system.

Then, I advanced to the next step anyway. I could see my other SATA
partitions on the same drive and on my 2nd SATA drive. Getting worse now!

I decided to go for a reinstall. The SATA drivers went in smooth as silk. I
looked at the partition where I had previously installed Vista. I know for a
fact that I had used 14 gig out of the 30 gig partition. The visual
indicator told me that I had 30 gig of 30 gig "FREE" space.

I had lose every bit/byte from the partition. I have now finished the
reinstall and am going to again try try PerfectDisk Boot Time Defrag,
without any other programs installed.

I will keep you informed as to how it goes.
