Helping remove a dual installation of Windows XP

I need some advice.

A friend of mine started having problems with XP. He thought it was a
firewall problem, went through a couple of help desks and was advised by a
friend to reinstall XP.

He tried to do this using the "upgrade" selection. He was not able to
successfully complete the upgrade and brought me the CPU last night.

I could not get the halfway done process to ever complete. So I installed
XP in another directory and got it to work and was able to save the five
users worth of My Documents onto CDs. Now the PC asks which config to use
at startup. I would like to find how to get rid of the installation in
\windows and then reinstall it again in that directory and then remove the
installation I made in the new directory. There is not an option in
'add/delete programs for this. Can anyone help?

Thanks, in advance,
Levi

I've been in the same situation once or twice... I would just delete the
\windows directory from inside windows, should be able to since it is not
the active directory, then reinstall to the \windows dir then delete the old
dir. Then there's a way to get the menu to stop coming up at boot time. Go
to the system control panel, advanced tab, startup and recovery. The top
section is all about the boot menu.
