I am in dire straits. I went to the Microsoft web site to
update windows and in the process of installing Service
Pack 1, my computer froze. Anyway, I HAD to reboot. Now
I cannot get the computer up using that hard drive. The
info is on there, but Windows won't load. I've tried
Norton WinDoc and Disk Doctor and it has not solved the
problem.

Any suggestions?

have you tried booting in safe mode, or 'last known good' (F8 after the
BIOS finishes and windows starts to load)? If that doesn't work, sounds
like it's repair install from the original WinXP installation CD time
(or better yet, from a copy that has SP1 integrated with it).

Your computer may not have been frozen; always wait,
Windows XP doesn't freeze up completely.
Restarting your computer is Service Pack upgrade is fatal
to Windows. (that's why the cancel button is greyed out,
it can't be stopped once it has started)
You must reinstall Windows XP.

It doesn't freeze? Well, the mouse did not affect the
cursor. It was stuck for a very long time on a pretty
fast computer, 2GHz PIV.

If I reinstall, does it have to format my hard drive or
anything. I've got a lot of info on there.
