HELP XP will not let me install simple printer software

Downloaded needed software from HP. When try to install I get an error
message saying "16 bit windows subsystem-this file is not suitable for MS DOS
and windows applications" I don't understand this at all. This is the correct
software version for XP. XP is 32 bit right??
