Help with "Thotkey" error

Hello,
Intermittently I've been getting this box coming up after boot up.
( Retrieval of "Thotkey" failed
Error Code - 0x00031402, 0x00000002 )
This is a Toshiba Satellite laptop.
I've Googled and researched my little limited techie brain as far as it will
take me with still no clue as to what this is, what it does or what to do to
get rid of it???
I've run my Norton AV and have no viruses.
I've cleaned up everything that Spybot S & D indentified as a nasty pest.
I'm limited out on what to do now.
Can anyone help me or direct me to help on this issue?
Thank You very much in advance...

A Google for "thotkey.exe" brings up a lot of sites in Russian, lists of
items in HijackThis logs, etc. It's hard to get a definitive answer
from that, but what the search *doesn't* bring up is anything to
suggest this is a Toshiba file. I'd do the normal Windows
troubleshooting for this sort of thing:

1) scan with current antivirus ("current" means a version not earlier
than 2002 but using updated virus definitions); 2) remove spyware with
Spybot Search & Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) and Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com). These programs are free, so use them both since
they complement each other. Be sure to update these programs before
running, and it is a good idea to do virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode.

We'll, I've already done everything except Ad-aware and scanning in safe
mode! I will try those next week when my cousin brings back his laptop.
Why scan in safe mode??
Thanks much Malke

Because most (I don't say "all") malware isn't running in Safe Mode and
you can't delete a file that is in use. You might also try CWShredder
and HijackThis, which you can get from here:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html

They are expert tools, particularly HijackThis, so be sure to read the
instructions first. Some malware is quite hard to get rid of. A great
resource for help with malware is the forums on www.spywareinfo.com.

Good luck,

Malke
