Hi Can anyone help

Just bought a HP nc6000 laptop with XP Pro installed, the first thing I did was to create a Restore Point and then further restore points before loading various software.

I tried to restore to a previous point and the system went through the normal functions then gave a message saying it could not restore to that point and suggested I pick another point.

Every restore point I picked failed to restore with the same message, so any idea what is wrong and how can I put it right I have been using windows ME for the last 5 years and so I'm not that familiar with XP Pro.

The HP NC6000 laptop did not come with any disks so I am not sure how I can re install the operating system, is it on a protected part of the hard drive, if so what do I need to do to reinstall the OS if I need too.

Many thanks in anticipation.

I don't know the answer to your System Restore question but I'd check to
see if you have something interfering with it, perhaps something like
Norton GoBack. Here is a link to MVP Bert Kinney's site about System
Restore: http://bertk.mvps.org/index.html . I would start there.

As for making Recovery CD's, read the manual that came with your laptop
or look on HP's website. Recent HP computers allow you to make physical
Recovery CD's. There may be an entry to do this in your Start menu, but
definitely HP will know the answer.

For information on troubleshooting System Restore check one of the best
references on the net found here http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html

As for running the recovery process you should consult your Laptop's manual
or check the HP site to see what they suggest. If there is a hidden
protected partition often the manufacturer provides a control panel applet
or a bootable CD to start the process in the event that you can't boot the
system.

I'm curious, where did you get the idea that GoBack can or does interfer
with System Restore? I read that occasionally but have never been able to
find a case of it actually happening.
