Help with setting up new groups

Frances

I am using windows xp outlook express 6 and I love News groups. I
tried to set up the news on my new laptop without success. I am trying
to set up news.aliant.net and everything is fine untill I get to the
point where I download a list of the various newsgroups. I get a
message saying 1153 downloaded but the screen is blank where I need to
pick the groups to subscribe to . I have checked with Aliant support
and they didn't understand what could be wrong . WE tried removing
firewalls, removing and adding the info for the server, reseting the
list a dozen times nothing appears under the ALL Tab so I can
subscribe to a news group. Does anyone have a suggestion . WE are on
High speed internet access. We did a defrag, I have verified all
setting with Aliant and everything is ok. They said maybe there is an
XP firewall we cannot find that is blocking the list of news groups
from appearing . Please help Fran

The following is my opinion only.

If you are any kind of newsgroup junky you need to dump OE. OE is not for news
junkies.

My personal recommendation is Agent 2.0. I've been using Agent for newsgroups
since version 99b from around 1996 or so.

If you do binaries such as mp3s you "really" need to dump OE. Over the years I
have gotten a lot of people to change from OE and IE for newsgroups to Agent,
and they've never looked back.

You can get a 30 day trial copy of it to try it out at www.forteinc.com. After
30 days you either have to buy it or it reverts to Free agent which is not
nearly as good as Agent.

You will need to get your newsserver name (I guess you did mention that above)
and mail server info from your ISP prior to set up so that when those prompts
come up on installation, you have all your info at hand when needed.

It is $29.95, but I paid that amount back in '96, so at today's prices it's a
bargain.

Just my two cents.
