Help With Scanning Slides on the Epson 4870/4990

I've used the 4870 for a couple of years for REFLECTIVE scanning --
no problems. Today I tried the unit with 35mm SLIDES for the first
time. Here's the problem:

If I use the EpsonScan software as a Photoshop plug in, I want the
images to come into Photoshop as Photoshop "PSD" files (as they do
on Reflective scans). But the images come is as JPEGS. If I use
EpsonScan in stand-alone mode, although I properly designate in the
dialog box that scanned images should be in "TIFF" format, they are
"BMPs" instead.

Any clue as to what is going on?

Thank you,

Howard

Hi Howard...

None at all, used all kinds of Epson scanners and never
experienced what you describe...

Closest I've come to anything similar happened just a
short while ago, when PSP became corrupted so as to
not recognize tiff; either inbound or outbound. A re-install
cured it.

However, suspect that you might be happier using Photoshop
itself to import raw data via the twain driver. Then you're
free to save it in any format that you choose.

Just a suggestion.

Take care.

Maybe I am not clear from your post, but if you are accessing the EpsonScan
software via the Photoshop plug-in, EpsonScan should just scan and then
leave the file sitting open in Photoshop. From there, you can save it as
any file type you want. When you click on save, you enter the name and then
can click on the drop down box for file type and select the file type.

Howard,
I use the EpsonScan software as a Photoshop plug in

It never occurred to me that it could be done that way. How did you
set that up?

Photoshop file type setting is sticky to the last way you saved your
file. So if you saved your last file as a jpeg, jpeg will come up in
the save and save as boxes. Just use the drop down menu and change to
the file type you want.

Thanks Tom, that answered one issue; for all, here's a clarification on
the other aspects:

A more precise description of the problem is that when using Photoshop
in EpsonScan Plug-in mode, Epsonscan LEAVES BEHIND ON MY DESKTOP,
"d21tmp01.bmp" d21tmp02.bmp", etc., for every slide scanned --- even
after I've saved the scanned inmage as a ".PSD" file. I then have to
manually DELETE each such "BMP" left behind on my desktop. Moreover,
even if deleted, if during the same session I go back to EpsonScan, all
those "BMPs" reappear on my desktop. What would cause this?

A related question: in using the "bounding box" feature, if one
manually adjusts the bounding box on each of the eight slides in the
slide holder/tray, then activates the "Digital Ice" feature, will
EpsonScan apply Digital Ice to each of the eight slides? Or will
EpsonScan apply Digital Ice only when one slide at a time is scanned?

Thanks,

Howard

Howard,
That is weird I've used 2 Epson scanners and Epson Scan and never had
this problem. I exit Epson Scan and the scanned images are sitting in
PS. I would deinstall - reinstall the program. Have you called Epson
about this, they can be helpful. Also make certain you have the latest
version for your scanner. A lot has happened to Win XP in the last 6
months. Also make sure all your drives have enough space for the
Windows and PS temp files. I try to keep them on separate drives.

Good luck

You might want to post your file-to-the desktop issue in the Epson Scanners
users forum at Yahoo Groups. I have never heard of this particular problem
before but maybe someone else has in the group.
