The error message you're receiving probably means you need to replace the
battery on your motherboard. Take a look at these articles for more info.

How To Replace The CMOS Battery In Your PC
http://www.liverepair.com/encyclopedia/articles/cmosreplace.asp

How to Install a CMOS Battery

On a side note, replacing the battery might not solve your shutdown issue. Odds
are you have another hardware problem. My best guess is either overheating or a
defective power supply unit. You might want to post your question that deals
with hardware issues.

Good luck

How old is the computer?

Have you made any attempt to change the CMOS battery?

That sounds very explicit to me. The CMOS battery has failed, as it
says, and needs to be replaced.

If you're not familiar with it, the battery is on the motherboard, and
is a small metal disk, about the size and shape of a US quarter. It's
held in place by a clip. Take it out, take it to your local store and
buy one of the same type to replace it. They are inexpensive, just a
few dollars.

As Ken had stated, you DO need to replace your old battery. You can get one
at any Radio Shack or usually any place that sells digital camera batteries.
I've found them at places like Walgreen's, Wal-Mart, etc. In my opinion,
since this is the cheapest option, you should try it first. If that doesn't
work. Your next best bet is replacing your PSU, which you can get at Best
Buy. The power supply is held in place by 4 bolts and the wired connections
going from it into your motherboard. If you need to, you can wrap a piece of
tape around each separate connection describing where it went before. Then
install the new replacement and put the connections in the same place as on
the one before. This works 90 percent of the time. The only other
possibility could be your motherboard(unlikely, but I've seen it), which
could have been affected by a dying power supply. In which case, replacing
the motherboard would be the most expensive and time consuming to replace of
the three. Good luck!
