I'm putting together a system with an ASUS P5GD1-VM (socket 775) with the
following configuration:

Intel Pentium 4, 3.0 GHz (socket 775)
1 GB DDR 400 RAM
DVD read/write
1394/USB combo card

I bought a 24 pin power supply as well to replace the one that came with the
case.

When I power up, the system goes through the boot up process, and then after
a few seconds, it shuts down a half minute or so into the process. If I
press the Del key, it goes into the BIOS setup, but then it also shuts down
after a half minute or so. What seems to be the problem? I did not find any
useful info on the ASUS web site and the manual does not have a
troubleshooting section.

Regards,
Joseph

Does the CPU get hot? Is the CPU fan going?

If you go straight into the bios, and then to the hardware monitor portion,
the CPU shouldn't go over 60c. If it climbs steadily over 60c than shuts
down (75c?) it will be because the CPU heatsink is not correctly mounted
with thermal grease. Take a look over at www.arcticsilver.com for some
instructions.

That was the first thing I looked at. The CPU fan is going fine, and the fan
is plugged into the keyboard using the 4-pin motherboard fan connector. For
some reason, I believe that the MB believes that wither the CPU or the MB
chipset (does not have a fan) is overheating. The CPU is installed properly,
otherwise the BIOS will not recognize it (attached is a longer description
of the problem). The system is shutting down after less than 1 minute from
me pressing the power button, so I can't even go to the hardware monitor to
check temperature and the CPU and MB chipset are both cold to the touch.

When I power the system up, it starts the boot sequence and then shuts down
about 30 seconds later. If I press the Del key to enter setup, I see the
following:

American Megatrends

ASUS P5GD1-VM ACPI BIOS Revision 1003

CPU: Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz

Speed: 3.00 GHz

Entering Setup ...

Press F8 for BBS POPUP

PC-3200 Dual Channel Interleaved

Checking NVRAM..

Initializing USB Controllers .. Done

1016MB OK

US Devices(s): 1 Mouse

And then the system shuts down. What causes the system to shut down? I
disconnected everything, except for the motherboard (and took out the one
add-in PCI card), but this still happens.
