help with old app in winxp machine

Hello,

I am trying to figure out how to run an older application written to run
in a DOS environment under win98 (I hope my description is correct).

Our lab has been measuring bone mineral density with a device attached
to an older computer, in DOS. Later, the manufacturer upgraded the
hardware and the software, by bringing a win98se machine. The old
software would then start from a batch file, go into full screen view,
640x480, like it was before, and it would not run in a window.

We do not use this software elsewhere, but we have a new device, for
which there is a new version of the software, that runs in a window
under windowsxp.

It would be terrible handy to have also the old software in the same
machine, since the new one cannot read the database created by the old
software in the old machine, and we occasionally have to check old
measurements. The old software won't install in XP at all on a P4
platform, it reports that it doesn't find a 386 compliant device (or
something like that) and it ends there. We have both machines now side
by side in a closed network, but it would be nice to get rid of the old
machine.

I tried various virtual machines and emulators on the winxp machine...

VMvare :
- installed win98, installed the old application, it won't switch to
full screen in the virtual machine, useless.
- installed FreeDOS 1.0, but the application installation crashes with
"unexpected directory @DESKTOPDIR on line 124"... Apparently it needs a
win9x installation first.

MS VirtualPC 2004 :
- installed win98, installed my application, but the virtual machine
freezes when I launch the app.
- installed FreeDOS : same error as in VMware.

Bochs 2.3
- installed FreeDOS : same error as in VMware.

Apparently the application really needs a win9x environment, but cannot
be run in a window ?

Can anyone suggest a way to run this app in winxp, based on these
observations, or at least in a virtual win98 machine ?

I have tried the usual tickboxes for the application in the win98
computer, etc... it always starts in full-screen. Moreover, there is no
way to capture the screen when the app is running, and paste it in an
image editor in the win98 environmnent, the PrtScrn key doesn't work
even if I select to do in the app launcher.

Any help appreciated.

'MS VirtualPC 2004' sounds like your best bet. Giving the virtual machine a
higher dosage of RAM might stop it freezing (via Settings > Memory), as may
adjusting some of the general options available via File > Options

eg File > Options > Performance (giving greater priority to the Window)
( File > Options > Full-screen mode > [Unchecking the "Adjust screen
resolution...." ] )
(Settings > Display > "Use guest operating system resolution....." )

Installing 'Virtual machine additions' [Right-alt + i (while Windows 98 is
running)] may help with the Print Screen problem.
