Help with Office 97

I can't seem to type any text in office 97 programs such
as excel and word. The cursor just flashes, and doesn't
respond to me typing on the keyboard or hitting enter.
I've unistalled office 97 and reinstalled it but that
didn't help. I have windows XP. If anyone can help, I'd
be very grateful.
