help with NET SEND

I'd like to use NET SEND to send a quick message to user AB1234 on our
Win2k network. We're all running the Messenger service. At a DOS
prompt I type

NET SEND AB1234 Hello this is a test

and I get this error:

"An error occured while sending a message to AB1234.
The message alias could not be found on the network.
More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2273."

My friend definitely logs in to the network with userid AB1234. Any
thoughts as to why it's not working?
