Help with Hotfixes..........?????

Robert

Need Help with Hotfixes... I have posted twice now, see
the question and response and first question below. When I
wrote the question below I recieved 3 replies. I
appreciate the replies, but I am still totally confused. I
have been working with computers for years, and Windows XP
is new to me. There has not been this big a change since
going from Dos to Windows 95. My issue is two-fold....

I downloaded the Wireless update for Windows XP Service
Pack 1 which is now installed on my computer. This is the
Windows Hotfix that I cannot get removed from my computer.
Based on MICROSOFT's own website this can be removed in
two ways... One is to use the Add/Remove Programs option
and the other is to utilize spuninst.exe....

The problem is that under Add/Remove programs feature in
Windows XP Home Version Service Pack 1... there are
multiple listings for Windows XP Hotfixes - KB??????. NONE
OF THESE HAVE THE OPTION TO REMOVE. I click on them and
they highlight and then I try double clicking and nothing.
I try to right click and nothing. There is no option to
remove any of them and the only option is to click
on "click for support information"... and this does not
allow any removal either. So how can this be removed?

Next, I have been told to go to the %systemroot% (which I
come to find out is C:/windows) and then go to
$NtUninstallKB826942$\spuninst and run spuninst.exe... Ok
this sounds feasible, BUT there is no such file able to be
found on my computer named spuninst.exe. Also, I cannot
find this directory either.. in 'real' terms what does
this directory stand for? what do the $ signs around it
mean? How do I access or find this file if it exists? I
performed a file/folder search and no hits for spuninst...

Please advise....
Thanks,
Rob

I had posted earlier with a question about removing
hotfixes from Windows XP (see the question below along
with the response)...
I have two additional questions:

1) Why does Microsoft say to utilize the Add/Remove
Programs feature to remove the hotfixes when there is no
option to do so for hotfixes under this feature?

2) How do you look in %systemroot% on Windows XP?? How do
I get to it? I'm sorry if this is an easy question, but I
just got it a week ago.

Thanks,
Rob

Hi

Have a look in %systemroot% for a folder named
$NtUninstallKB826942$\spuninst - run the spuninst.exe file
in there.

| I recently installed the Wireless service pack update for
| my Windows XP Home Edition (with Service Pack 1). This is
| Windows Hotfix KB826942.
|
| I was reading the Microsoft website and it discussed the
| removal of this patch utilizing the Control Panel, Add /
| Remove Programs option. Also, it discussed utilizing
| spuninst.exe.
|
| I can find no file on the computer which is titled
| spuninst.exe.
|
| Also, when in the Add / Remove Programs section, you can
| highlight multiple 'Hotfixes' included the KB826942 which
| I installed. The problem is there is no option to remove
| any of these hotfixes. I was looking around this website
| and for all hotfixes / patch removals for Windows XP it
| discusses utilizing this option, BUT there is NO option
to
| remove these items.
|
| Please advise!
|
| Thanks,

Hi Robert,

Go to the Control Panel/Folder Options, and on the View tab, set the options
so you can see hidden and system files. Specifically:

Enable (check) "Display the contents of system folders"
Enable (check) "Show hidden files and folders"
Disable (uncheck): "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)"

I also recommend that you disable (uncheck) "hide extensions for known file
types".

Then retry locating that folder, the spuninst.exe file should be in the
spuninst folder under that hotfix.

Hi

I'm encountering problems trying to uninstall Windows Hotfix - KB828741 as
per the instructions on the Norton Web Site due to the clash of the hotfix
with that of Norton Antivirus 2004. I believe that once the hotfix is
uninstalled and Norton Antivirus 2004 is reinstalled then my problem Norton
should be lessened.

But how can you only install just this Hotfix?

I have found the files you mentioned to Rob but as far as I can see I cannot
link any to the hotfix I need to uninstall. Any help would be appeciated.
