help with FP2003 error messages & yahoo hosting

comeing here. I am a novice on front page.
http:\\stateson.net\researchriders

I am having problems with FP2003 and smallbusiness.yahoo.com where i am
putting a web page together http:\\stateson.net\researchriders. I enabled
the yahoo account for front page extensions like their faq said. I am
currently using ftp instead of html for publishing as I kept getting these
error messages:

http://stateson.net/error_messages/sharepoint_err.jpg and
http://stateson.net/error_messages/sharepoint_err2.jpg

Yahoo recommends not using FP2003 due to security problems they have not
worked out yet. They claim to be using FP2002 extensions and this is their
faq on it:

This is what they say about which components of frontpage they support

I do not see sharepoint listed (ie: no "no" nor a "yes" for that matter).
Yahoo has subwebs and I created some subwebs and named them but I cannot
seem to match my subsites from FP to corresponding subwebs at yahoo. I get
those error messages above any time I try to publish using html. I can make
it work only if I select FTP on the remote web site properties.

Can the fact that I am creating subdirectores off the webroot be a problem?
I want those subdirectories to be essentially a "website". I set up the
subwebs at yahoo for username/password access and matched the subdirectories
against what I want my various frontpage projects to be named, but I am
unable to use html and frontpage extensions and only ftp seems to work.

Also, can somebody recommend another inexpensive hosting service, one that
allows spaces in filenames? The yahoo one chokes on filenames it does not
like and FP does not give me the name of the file and I have to hunt for
which one had a space in the name.

Go to Tools --> Page Options. Under the Page Options window goto Authoring
Tab, uncheck the SharePoint Services check box.

Using FTP will break the FrontPage extensions. They will need to be
re-installed. Problems in publishing to Yahoo are not uncommon.

Yahoo uses Unix servers and cannot support Sharepoint Services - these
require a Windows 2003 server.

With the possible exception of Yahoo, any server with FrontPage 2002
extensions will support FrontPage 2003. I have never heard of any security
issue that specifically affects FP2003.

A subsite can be published from any location to any server (with extensions)
as either a root web or as a subweb. A subsite is a web in its own right.

Avoid using spaces in folder and file names. Some servers choke on spaces,
and so do some browsers.
The space replacer add-in from www.jimcoaddins.com will remove the spaces
from all your file and folder names and update links very quickly.

For an alternative low cost host look at www.webhost4life.com , but the
servers are a little slow. If you check through this newsgroup you will
find many other recommendations.

They do have a control panel that allows for websters to install/uninstall FPSEs themselves (handy).

Thanks Rob, a lapse in my memory there.

Some hosts do not allow the use of subwebs, or insist on creating the
subwebs themselves.

I have created a subweb for one of my clients using Yahoo as the host. It's
a commercial hosting package. Kinda confusing to set up but been OK for a
couple of years.

That could be, I left them back in April and I didn't have the commercial package...but I was paying a whopping 29.95 a month..where I'm at now I'm paying 14.95 and have 3x the features.

Yah Unix servers can be a little tricky sometimes - I'm much mo' happy on Windows - and it drives me a little cwazy when I have to work on a client's web that's still on *nix.

I finally heard back from yahoo. This is what they said about FP2003...

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Customer Support.
As with any major software release from any software manufacturer,
Yahoo! does not recommend its customers upgrade immediately to this new
version of software. Rather, customers should continue using the current
version until notified via service announcement by Yahoo.
Yahoo! Web Hosting and Yahoo! Merchant Solutions will continue to
support FrontPage 2002 but will not support FrontPage 2003 at this time.
We do expect to support FrontPage 2003 in the future, but do not have a
definitive timeframe for doing so.

2003 works just fine on Yahoo. To create a subweb, log on to your yahoo
site.
Go to your Web Hosting Control Panel.
Under "Build my Website" select FrontPage Manage Subwebs and Authors.
In the left column, select Manage Subwebs. You can create a new folder or
select from an existing one.
After you do this you will be able to logon live with FP and change any
server settings/permissions.

(above relates to a merchant solutions account)

Yahoo is pretty uneducated
They do not need to do anything to "support" FP 2003
- it is a client (user) program and interacts w/ the FP 2002 SE just like FP 2002

As for their "Merchant Solutions" if it uses the FP object model in any way as an addin to FP, then they are just late in upgrading
their software to use the new FP 2003 object model

There are not and probably won't ever be any FP 2003 SE

The sub-domain capability provided by Yahoo Web Hosting with FP2003
(past) and FP2003 works well. I have two Yahoo business class services
for two seperate domains. Different stand-alone sites are set up by
domain and subdomains. Each subdomain functions as a unique web site.
This works well. Keeping the e404s and robot.txt in order for each
subdomain is a bit confusing. An unintended side benefit is a hot
back-up site capability (w/o automatic failover of course. Alas, this
is needed due ongoing FP instablity with Yahoo. (3 service outages
outages the past month, one for 3.5 days- where FP link bars break and
FP publishing does not work).

Yahoo support is terrible. The reps try hard but troubleshooting is a
unqiue experice on every call. Wish this were the exeception.

Off to post another FP Yahoo call for help in this forum.
