help with email attachments

Claire Shortt

I can't open some email attachments. When I double click
the paperclip icon in the listing of emails section, I
get this message - "OE removed access to the following
unsafe attachments in your mail: then it lists the
attachments". It happened with 2 different emails, one
of which had 2 attachments - one I could open, one I
couldn't. All of the ones I couldn't open had an icon
with what looked like 2 sheets of paper offset with the
letter W on the top one.
Also, I just loaded Sympatico's anti-virus program. Don't
know if that has anything to do with this prob or not.
Please help.

Go to Options then Security and uncheck do not allow attachments to be
opened. Should be fine after that.

Greetings --

Outlook Express' default security settings are simply trying to
protect you. OE has no way of telling whether an attachment actually
contains a virus or not, so it temporarily blocks any of those file
types that could potentially contain a virus. In Outlook Express,
Tools > Options > Security, uncheck the "Do not allow attachments to
be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" option, assuming
you trust the source, of course. The wiser course of action, however,
would be to modify your list of unsafe files, as outlined in the KB
articles below:
