Sometimes, I have that problem too. However, whenever it does it leaves the
performence meter in the task bar, and I'm able to double-click on it to bring
the task manager back up.

Go to Start > Run > type in "regedit" > hit Enter

What happens? Does the Regedit program stay on?

What am I infected with.

It very well might be:

W32.HLLW.Cydog@mm

Here's a link to an explanation, watch word wrap:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

I *think* there are other malware-viruses etc. that block the regedit and
Task Manager too, so make sure to virus scan and get a name.

I don't remember the name of what I had here, but I had a virus on one of my
machines that enduced symptoms like yours. It alters the registry so that
those two programs are unavailable making it harder to remove. But there are
routines to remove it.

You should install Grisoft AVG, McAfee or Norton or some virus checker run
it and see what comes up - usually they will name it. Then search for a
routine from McAfee or Symantec or some place that will remove it.

Also check back here for responces form other people who might narrow it
down for you. Let the group know what happened too!

Be happy, it's just one of those things ..

Greetings --

This behavior is a common symptom of more than one virus/worm, the
three below being the most common:
