Help with copying files from XP to WIN98

Hi All,

As I don't run XP I am wandering in waters I do not know !

A friend of mine has a Laptop with XP on - they are wanting to copy some
files from this machine to a desktop running WIN98.

No network or file transfer progies installed. I've copied files in the
past on machines I had with Laplink or similar but is it possible to
connect the two with a serial cable without the need for such software ?

I've serached Google but not quite come up with an answer yet.

Any help much appreciated.

IF - both have USB, then get a USB-to-USB transfer cable.
Most come with a "Simple" explorer like interface. You just
drag and drop from one PC to the other. Cost's around $25.

You can use serial-to-serial, but it's problematic at best.

Or get a couple of USB NIC cards and then a cross-over
cable and use TCP/IP for the transfer.

They do so that may be an option.

Thought as much :-(

I think the first idea maybe the best of the three.

Not having XP is it possible to run in a "DOS" type mode. I have an old
Laplink for DOS package that I have used with WIN95/98 machines without
much of a problem in the past and I wonder if that might work uder ZP ?

Thanks again.

Where you might run into trouble is with XP's protection
of the hardware layer. A DOS version of Laplink may try
to use direct calls to hardware ports, which XP would
probably block.

Thanks - sounds like it may not be worth the hassle of trying.

The methods Laplink used for serial or parallel port handling in DOS and
older windows will definitely *not* be acceptable to XP. I agree with
the USB suggestion - Laplink are one company that does the interconnect
'cable' and software as a complete package, which would probably be
easiest
