I have tried installing both a 200 and a 250gig hard drive (Maxtor). The
computer bios finds it ok but windows will start up to the scroling bar -
at 4-5 bars it reboots. I can get into it in a safe mode but not normally.
Actually - occasionaly I can get in once or twice.
I first used Ghost to transfer over my windows off of a 160 gig hard drive
where it worked ok. Last night I installed SR1 from my original version --
booted ok. I immediately updated using Microsofts Sr2 update and away we
went again. It has to be in Windows Sr2.
I tried updating the mb inf file this morning - no change.
Asus P4C800 deluxe (875p chipset).
HELP!!

Hi ... I will provide 3 forum sites that these people
just love to solve computers problems , So make a account
for each one and post your problem to them for help ,
Keep in mind that when posting a problem always mention
your full computer specs , follow by whats your problem
is and then afterward what steps you have already try ,
this way people can understand your problem better , here
are the 3 sites

Thanks for your response. I just spent 1 hour with a knowledgeable Microsoft
tech. If I uninstall SR2 Windows will reboot but if I install the SR2
update it wont. I can still get in via safe mode but not normally. He
thought it might be a networking card problem so I turned off the built in
card and removed the driverfromdevice manager - still no luck. I will call
Microsoft again tomorrow.
There are no drivers installed.
Hardware -except for the 250 gig hard drive- is exactly the same as the 160
gig drive.

What is "SR1", "Sr2"?

After you copied WinXP over to the new HD, did you remove
the original HD before booting the new HD for the 1st time?

Did you copy the MBR to the new HD?

Did you mark the new partition "active"?

Is the new partition a "primary" partition?

all yes.
I later installed a virgin copy of SP1 on the hard drive and all worked -
booted etc. Without adding any drivers except for the MB inf file I
used the official update to SR2. It wouldn't boot except in safe mode. I
then uninstalled the SR2 update and the hard drive booted again.
I turned off all devices in the bios etc.

So why will the install boot on a 160gig hard (sr1 + Sr2) but only Sr#1
will boot on a 200 or250 gig hard drive (rules out a bios or mb problem).

Let's assume by "SR1", "Sr2", etc., you mean "SP1", "SP2"
(for Service Pack 1, Service Pack 2). The SP2 patch is a big
hunk of code. Is the partition in the new hard drive big enough
to fit it? Why were drivers required in your installation of SP2?

*TimDaniels*

Yes the drive was tested and obviously worked as SR1 worked after install.
It was only after SR2 was installed that Windows would reboot on startup. On
a 160 gig drive all worked ok. A ghost image of the 160 gig drive also
wouldn't boot on the 200 or 250 gig drives.
The Motherboard INF file was the only file - driver installed. This allows
the motherboard chipsetto ralk to the OS properly.

It doesn't work because you're calling it "SR2" instead of SP2,
and because you toppost.

SR1 , SR2 >> Is got to be service pack 1 ( SR1 ) and
service pack 2 ( SR2 ) John is this what you are refering
to ??? SR1 is service pack 1 , Yes or No ?? If this is
correct John , then you have it wrong because SR1 is not
service pack 1 , its SP1 not SR1 , do you understand ??
SP1 is the correct way for service pack 1

If you can't determine that what I refered to as SR1 (service release #1)
is also called SP1 (service pack #1) there is no chance that you can help
me with my more serious problem. Please go back into your corner and play
with yourself. I will contact Maxtor.

I suggest that when in need of help that some slack be given to those trying
to help.

In the 4-5 posts you made in providing further information, you didn't even
"pick up" on the fact that the correct terminology for service packs is SP1,
SP2 etc.

If you post using the correct terminology you don't project the persona of a
rank beginner!

Richard, I hate to bring this up at a time like this, but Microsoft has used
"SR1" in connection with things like Service Release 1 for Windows 2000.

Yes, that is nasty of you. :-) But this is a Windows XP newsgroup,
and Microsoft and the news media have been referring quite
consistently to "Service Packs" in connection with WinXP.

I know, but it is fair to assume that old habits die hard and someone who
still refers to service packs as service releases is not being uninformed or
ignorant. Unfortunately this thread started going that way.
