Hello,

I am looking to remove a bios pasword from my laptop, I know what the
password is and have complete access to the computer but no longer need
or want to have the password in place. (I also never considered that I
would not be welcome when it came time to sell my machine).

I was hopeing that someone could help me with a process of removing the
password ideally without having to take apart my machine. If this is
not the best place to be asking this question I would also appreciate
someone pointing me to the best group to be posting these types of
questions.

I am not a tech person by nature but at the same time I am not
completely without some ability to poke around in the dos window if I
have some good instructions. Any help to clear this bios password would
be appreciated.

Thanks

Scott

The BIOS password has nothing to do with Windows or
with DOS. The best place to look is in the manual that came
with your laptop. If you have lost it then you should try the
manufacturer's FAQs. You could also post your question in
a hardware group. It is essential that you state the brand and
model of your laptop.

on my dell all I have to do is disable it once in the bios, you will have to
use the pw to get into the bios, it could be as simple as disable it or you
may have to blank the line for the pw
and save to bios. Without knowing the type of notebook you have this is just
a guess.

During the initial boot process there should be a message to the effect that
pressing the DEL, F1, or some other key will let you enter the bios setup
mode. Once in the setup mode you may find and option to turn of the password
function.

Thanks all - sorry for the incomplete post to begin with.

My laptop is the Latitude X1. I am also now thinking that I need to
confirm that it is actually a bios password that I need to reset.

The short version of a long story is that the computer was set up by
the tech department of my old (now defunct) company. I have assumed
that all this time I was dealing with a bios password.

What I see when I start up is a very brief (1 sec) splash screen
similar to what I get when I start up my other desktop machine. It is
then replaced with a grey and white screen stating that my computer is
protected by a password system....... and that i will need a user or
administrators password to proceed.

As I say, I had assumed that this was a bios pasword but now realize
that it may not be a correct assumption. If it does not sound like a
bios password then I wonder if any one would hazard a guess as to what
type of system it is and where it would "live" if I wanted to get rid
of it.

As I noted in my orignial post it is not critical for me now as I know
what the password is but at some point I may want to sell this machine
and I expect the new owner would like to not have to deal with this.

Thanks again.

if it is a windows password you can reset once in the operating system
it could be a novell password and I can't help you on that. Maybe someone
else knows.

It's definately not a BIOS password.

If you're going to sell it, the best thing you can do is to wipe and
reinstall for the next user.

Simply enter the computer's BIOS, and remove the password, following
the manufacturer's instructions, if it isn't immediately obvious how to
do so.

He already knows the all the passwords. But why on earth would anyone
need a BIOS password cracker? When you can simply either reset a
jumper, or pull the battery?
Because many people use those *&#$W% computer desks that make access to the case almost impossible.
Also some people are all thumbs when it comes to opening and accessing the items in the case.

Then go into the bios, change password, and change it to nothing. Save
and you're done.
