help w STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR

We built our first system a month ago or so, and it was working fin
until early this week. We started getting a KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERRO
(0x7a) stop on the BSOD. According to the Microsoft support site, on
of the parameters (0xC0000185, or STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR) "indicate
improper termination, defective storage controller hardware, o
defective disk cabling, or two devices attempting to use the sam
resources." We've reseated connectors, reloaded windows, re-boote
several times, and still can't get past the XP login screen. We als
can't get into safe mode. What's next, do we have to format the HD
How can we tell whether it's the disk or the controller? We'd like t
run some disk diagnostics, but the program available on the Maxtor sit
(powermax.exe) is incompatible with the Via K8T800 chip on the mobo
