Attempted a System restore to address performance issues, which failed to complete (Restore took an inordinate amount of time to complete, and then the automatic restart at end of the process failed to launch Windpws XP). Was able to complete a Repair Reinstall of XP (thanks to Michael Solomon MS-MVP) and save existing files, however unable to reconnect to internet. Previous dial-up connectivity info is gone, and when I try to "Add" new dial-up settings in the Internet Properties window, I get an error message 711. When I follow the recommended fix for this error and attempt to 'Start" the Remote Access Connection Manager in Services, I get another error message (5 - access denied). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

This edit corrects both 5 and 711:

Dial-Up Modem or PPPoE is Unavailable (Line 87)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Much obliged Kelly! While waiting and hoping for a reply, I found Article # 829779 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base which outlines registry edits to fix my issue, which I believe was caused (as suggested in the article) by executing a System Restore back to a point prior to the installation of Service Pack 1. QUESTION: Am I correct in assuming that the download you referenced from your site is an executable that will make these correcting entries to the registry automatically? Once again, thanks for your help!

Hi,

Most welcome and thanks for the reply. :o)

And yes, the edit performs enough of what is actually needed to get it all
working again.

This is my general response:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan

In the right pane, under ObjectName if LocalSystem is not listed under Data,
change it to read so.

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP
Delete the subkeys listed except 13 and 4.

Go to Start/Administrative Tools/Services. Set these three to "Automatic":
Remote Access Connection Manager, Remote Access Auto Connection
Manager,Telephony.

However, in your case, you seemed beyond that and only needed the edit at
this stage. The edit removes 25 and 26.
