Hello everyone,

My wife is an Access Database consultant. She is taking her first
client but confused on what to charge as an hourly fee. We have friends
charging $150 and hour but she feels this is high so I thought I might
post here to see what is a fair charge. The amount of work they want is
vast and upwards of 30+ hours or more. She doesnt want to scare them
off with a crazy fee but doesnt want to be robbed either. This is not
the largest company but essentially this will be one of their main apps
used. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

If this is her first job she might want to charge a flat rate based on the
estimated number of hours. If she doesn't want to tell them that this is her
first project she can tell them it's to get them as a client.

I'd guess that she will make more than minimum wage but will find a few
surprises along the way that will extend the time. Charge it up to
education.

From many years ago.

Client. "Can you make this field fill in automatically"
Me. "Yes."
Me "Here it is, see it fills automatically just like you wanted it to"
Client "How do I change it?"
....

What would a reasonable hourly wage be. She has years of access
training, its just her first consulting gig.

She could charge $100 or $75 to split the difference. I train adults
using MS Office. Sometimes I charge $35-$45 per hour. Right now the
market just sucks. However, if someone asks about Access, I tell them I
charge more, like $55-$75 range because Access leans more towards
programming & databases require more thought & care. You can always look
someone up in the phone book, call & ask them what they would charge for
that type of service & see. But Access is more complex in the end & does
require more money.

Take a full time annual rate, divide it by 1000 to get a full-time contract
hourly rate,
then multiply by 2 for part-time casual rate.

$50,000 per year: $50 per hour contract rate, $100 per hour
part-time casual rate.

If you just work for an hour, your overheads are going to be
in the order of 3 hours, so if you won't charge $100, you won't
make $50,000

Thanks for all the replies. As to not scare them off she has offered
them a rate of $75 an hour. If not, its just not worth it for her. With
what they want done, I think its very reasonable.

Thanks for the help.
