I would like to replace my 20 gig HD with a much bigger one, and use my
existing 20 gig as a slave HD for data only.

How do I transfer everything in my HD to my new one, including Windows XP,
boot record and all.....

Thanks,
mac

When you purchase your new HDD it will come with a
utility CD that will do this for you. Read instructions
carefully, and have a back-up, just in case...

Mac, another option is to use a drive imaging program. This will create
an image of the hard drive which you can then burn to a DVD or CD's.
This is a good tool for backing up your system after the new hard drive
is working, too. There are several options:

BootIt NG
Drive Image 7 from Symantec
Norton Ghost from Symantec
Acronis True Image

First make sure your machine's BIOS can handle the size disk involved,
and if it is over 130GB nominal that you have XP Service Pack 1
installed.

What I use is BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware -
30 day full functional trial)

Download, to its own folder, extract from the zip, run the bootitng to
make a boot floppy.

With the new drive plugged in as slave/secondary, boot the floppy,
Cancel Install, entering maintenance, then click on Partition work.
Highlight your C:,Copy, then on left select the new drive (HD1),
highlight the Free Space in it, and Paste.

You might then consider a resize up a bit. Better though to leave
free space so as later to make a new separate partition it - in XP
Control Panel - Admin Tools - Computer Management, select Disk
Management and look lower right for the graphic of the drive. R-click
the Unallocated space and Create Partition. Depending on the size of
disk you might want one or two

Now click on 'View MBR' and in it highlight the entry for this new C
partition and click the 'Set Active' Click 'Write Standard MBR' and
Apply.

Close out, swap the disks to make the new one the one that boots, and
reboot into XP.
