I've got a corrupt Excel file. I've tried a few programs I found online.
Most couldn't do anything, but a couple were somewhat able to recover the
file, but in each cell it said 'lost string.' I don't know what this means.
Is there any hope of recovering this file? I'm not sure how it got damaged
in the first place. Thanks.

Mark

You may want to try openoffice. Lots of people have said that it's recovered
workbooks (including the project) that excel couldn't.

(http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD)

I downloaded the demo and it opened the file but the data is missing. Each
cell says #lost label instead of the actual data. During the recovery, it
stated the "ole document structure broken." Does this mean I am completely
doomed?

I don't know. Maybe you can ask someone at that site.

Can you find another pc with a different version of excel? Sometimes different
versions behave differently.

Other than that, maybe searching google for other recovery services would be
worthwhile.
