HELP: Problem with shortcuts on my desktop

Whenever I place shortcuts onto my desktop they don't work.
Then, when I try to delete them, I get an error message saying that they are
write-protected or that the disk is full.
This only started happening recently.
I now have several "shortcuts" that don't work, and which I can't remove, on
my desktop.
I am also concerned that this may be a symptom of something potentially
catastrophic.
Can anyone help!?
 
Related to this...my Netscape 7.1 and AIM will not work on XP. The shortcuts on my desktop for these apps do not work and neither does the executable file from the Program File. I have tried downloading it twice. What am I missing
