My recently (two months ago) upgraded computer with:
OS Windows XP Pro
Pentium 4 Processor 3.20GHz
120 GB Hard Drive
512 MB RDRAM
GA-81PE1000 Series Motherboard
will boot up, will show the desktop and all programmes but will not respond
AT ALL to any clicks on the desktop icons. It will show option to shut down
and will do so.

I booted up three times and shut it down three times, but the fault
persists.

Which way do I correct this fault? Many thanks,

Jan

Maybe some "friend" has placed a picture of your desktop as
wallpaper and has set your computer to hide the real icons?

Try right clicking on the desktop (on an icon) to see
whether you get icon properties or desktop properties.

Sure Jim, after your message, I was looking for the desktop in the loo,
where your ideas belong!

I did what you suggest as one of the tries, to restart it, but clicking on
Open or Properties produced NOTHING!

Jan

I saw it mentioned on a show (The Screensavers) as a
practical joke.

| New one for me, Jim!

You seem to be taking my idea as some personal attack on
you. It is a possibility and you asked for any help. If it
is wrong, then it is still a valid troubleshooting tip to
exclude.
XP can hide icons when the desktop is viewed as a webpage.
Screenshots can be set as wallpaper/background.
Pictures of icons don't work because they aren't icons.

Another cute trick is to set a wallpaper; invert the picture
and set it as wallpaper, then invert the display so the
picture is right side up but the icons are inverted (they
will work).

It is something that "friend" would do because it might be
hard to do remotely.

They call it the Screensaver effect. When they mention a
web site, it crashes.

I think it was last year April 1st when they talked about
"harmless" tricks to drive your co-workers nuts. Kevin Rose
did the segment I think.

I get the TechTV shows on a local low-power TV station (KTQW
53 LP)

Will look forward to this 4-1 (send 'em over).
And lucky you!
