Help Please!! Simple Network - Complex Problem

Hello,
I'm using Windows 2000 Advanced Server (Domain
controller) as a router and running NAT on Routing and
Remote Access for the following simple configuration

Internet ----> Windows 2000 server ----> Private network
card -----> Switch ------> Intranet Clients

Network Translation was done initially by internet
connection sharing, but now that is disabled and I'm using
NAT on Routing and Remote Access.

Problem:
I'm facing a http hiccup (timeout) problem on all the
intranet clients. Everything works fine on the server
itself. But the intranet clients often timeout randomly
on every website. Following is the configuration of the
server and a typical client. I'm very suspecious about
the routing table on the client (Please look , its Wierd!
It takes about 20 hops to get to the server!!!!!!) All of
them are automatically configured. No manual routing
whatsoever. Everything was working fine, until all hell
broke loose on intranet http few weeks ago,and I still
can't figure it out.

Please let me know if the client routing table has a
problem and how to correct it. I don't want to any manual
update to each and every intranet client. This thing
should work by default.

I even tried disabling Routing and Remote Access
(including NAT) and just enabled internet connection
sharing on the public interface on the server and still
have the same http timeout problem on all intranet
clients.

Well, first, if you are running DNS on the server, you need to remove the
DNS addresses from router and point the router to the server's IP address.
That would eliminate the hops.

I just changed it. I put in the server's IP addresses and
removed the dns addresses. Still same problem. no change
in the hops either on the intranet clients.

Have you manually added the server address as the DNS in each computer?
Also, are you running WINS or have NetBIOS installed on any of the
computers?
