parralel MIXED MODE AD domain?

Generally you need the target domain in Native+.

What does 'parallel' mean in this context?

If the domain names (NetBIOS) are the same then
it is very difficult to do this. Migration requires
a trust, (external) trusts use NetBIOS; these names
cannot work if duplicated.

You would probably have to migrate to a domain
with a different name, then to the real target.

Another of the reasons that domains should be
UPGRADED (in almost all cases.)

Let me clarify, we have a windows nt domain with w2k member servers, we have
created a 'clean' AD domain to which we will migrate users groups computers
etc. site by site installing new domain controllers as we go. and join the
w2k member servers to the ad domain.

When all sites have been moved into AD we can look at decommisioning the NT
domain.

The problem is when we join the member servers to the new domain, the
permissions on the shared folders and files will still contain groups and
permissions that point to the NT domain - we can't use the sid history as it
only works in native mode, is there any other way to translate the
permissions to point to the new domain without having to repermission
manually.

If it is a new domain, why ever can't you use Native
mode?

Do you really plan on installing NT BDCs at this point?

You can of course export and import them (not really
migrate) and the script SubInAcl to fixup the permissions
but it is not worth the trouble....

Migration however is almost always a mistake.
These systems are designed to be upgraded.
