Help! Photo Editor won't open photos

Occasionally when I try to open a photo in Microsoft
Photo Editor it won't open. I get the message, "Can't
determine type" and "Photo Editor cannot find or open
c:\..." I can't open those photos in any other program
either. Is there anyway to salvage these photos, and if
so, how? What can I do to prevent this from happening
again? The digital camera I use is a Canon PowerShot S230.

Thanks for any help you can give!

================================
Do you know the format these images are
saved in? Is it possible that you renamed
them and forgot to add .jpg to the end of the
file name?

And, it is certainly possible that you have
some corrupted files. If you are downloading
directly from your camera to your hard drive
be certain that your camera batteries are not
low...that could cause corruption. This is one
of the main reasons that I suggest using a
USB card reader.
