help - no laptop out there can see 4 gb of ram.

i work for a software compnay who needs to demo their software on a
laptop...and 3gb of ram is not enough...we need 4:(

we tried different types of laptps from dell, hp, etc...none of which
shows the full 4gb of ram we physically have.(2x2gb dimm)

the dell d620 - 3.0gb
hp intel chip - 3.3gb
hp amd64x2 chip - 2.7gb

the problem seems to be 3 fold:

1. OS - 32 bit os can not see all 4gb
2. cpu - 32 bit cpu (core duo) will not allow you to install xp64
(the one with amd64x2 actaully shows the least amount of memory, see#3)
3. chipset / mobo - only supports memory address up to 4 gb, so video
card, network card would take away the total 4gb of ram space.
(as evident by the dell d620's BIOS, only 3063 mb of ram is available
in the BIOS, not even going into windows!)

now, i know the core 2 duo is 64bit...but does anyone have any idea on
if the chipset will be able to adderss more than 4gb? if not, i think
we'll have the same exact problem....

has anyone else seen this problem, and any solutions?
(or better yet, anyone has a 4gb laptop model they can recommand?)

thanks a lot!

Have you tried the software to see if it will work, and if it doesn't, might
it not be a good idea to tailor the software such that it runs on hardware
that is available?..

this is an enterprise application software suite...
we've tried to tell our developers to develop more lean softwares...:(

but the underlying problem is our SE trying to show case the software
suite on a laptop that's meant to run on a dell 2850 or better....

The best I found pre-configured was 2GB. But you can chat with sales
directly. It may bear fruit.

4GB is excessive, though. Perchance you should cut back the amount of
ram on the Developer's workstations :) Make them deal with less.

Carry a small form factor desktop PC
and use your laptop as a remote terminal (RDP, VNC... )
