help! no internet gateway

Z

Ztron24

i'm trying to netwirk an xp pc to an xp laptop and i'm getting the
same problem that this guy had a few months back:

I have a firewire network between 2 computers running xp

the computers share the files and the printers with no problem.
but Internet sharing doesnt work.

There is no Internet gateway icon on the network connection screens of
any of the computers.

the settings are standard 192.168.0.1 (server) 192.168.0.2 (client).
the client has the dns and the gateway pointed to 192.168.0.1

the internet connection on the server is shared (all 3 boxes checked)
and not firewalled. I am not running any other firewall and i disabled
the antivirus.

If i re-run network wizard everything it does is messing up my
firewire connection on the client. (it set to automatic ip and I need
to reset it manually to 192.168.0.2).

I started the Universal plug and play on both machines, as well as the
SSDP.

in my view the problem is that the Internet gateway (IG) is not
appearing. It indeed appear a few months ago and i was able to share
the internet. But when i recently connected the 2 computers again it
was gone. To make it appear 2 months ago I just tried with network
wizard.. after a few times IG miracously loaded in the client machine.
Not sure what I did then , but it appear to me quite a random event.

anyway, If you think i am missing something let me know

thank you

so, the network is fine on mine, the computers recognize each other,
but i can't get ICS to work, i've run the wizards a billion times, and
at one point the 'internet gateway' icon pooped up magically on the
client computer but i can't get it to come back, there's not one on
the host. and the host is configured to share it's broadband. please
help - it's been a frustraing night!

I don't think that the absence of the Internet Gateway, by itself,
explains why the client can't access the Internet. The Internet
Gateway is optional, as you know, since you can disable it by
un-checking the appropriate box on the host's shared connection.

There should be no need to manually assign the client's TCP/IP
configuration. If you do a manual assignment, make all of these
settings:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1 or your ISP's DNS server

If XP has created a network bridge on either computer, right click and
delete the network bridge.

Try disabling and then re-enabling ICS on the host's Internet
connection. If it asks what connection to use for the home network,
tell it to use the FireWire connection.

These tests should help find the problem:

1. On the host, right click the local area network connection and
click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: none
DNS Server = none

2. Open a command prompt window on the client and enter these lines.
Each one should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.100
ping www.google.com

4. Enter these addresses in Internet Explorer on the client. They
should both take you to the Google web page:

http://www.google.com
