Hi, I've got a new Acer 290E laptop with installed Windows XP Home
edition and Zonealarm's Security Suite.

Internet Explorer, version 6, SP1, doesn't display Ebay's thumbnails
and other pics, only showing placeholders.

Another problem: When I display a stock market charting Java Virtual
Machine (subscription service only) the browser only shows a frame but
no data or drawings; whereas, on Windows 98 on my desktop everything
shows normally. On another charting service, the line-drawing function
is screwed up on the laptop, i.e. the line doesn't draw accurately, on
the laptop.

Zonealarm Security Suite, with anti-virus and firewall, is running
also.

I noticed that my desktop browser (also IE 6) has Java Virtual Machine
options, whereas the laptop IE 6 browser doesn't.

Thanks in advance for all suggestions.

In its Internet Options - Advanced make sure it has the Multimedia
options checked to display pictures.

You may need also in the Security page to highlight Internet Zone, click
Custom and make sure that in Miscellaneous 'Allow scripting of Internet
Explorer Webbrowser controls' is checked

MS produced a Java that extends the language as defined by Sun, so that
it would 'work better' with Windows. This was not included in windows
XP, but was available as a separate download, and included in XP SP1

Sun sued MSoft, and the ruling in the case prohibits MS from making
'their' engine available as a download - so it is left out of the
revised SP1a

You can try the Sun one from
http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

or
You can still get a 3805 or 3809 build from some sites that are *not*
MSoft sites - and MSoft is not going to object.
Once you have such an older version you can get the 816093 'critical
security update' which is effectively a complete build, 3810
