colin, the cd im using is the one i got with my pc in 2001 so i suppose it OEM?

Is it a restore cd or is it a hologrammed Microsoft cd that says "for
installation on a new computer only"?

What happens if you remove the cd and reboot the computer? Does the
installation start again?

What do you mean by setting up the board auto?

i installed the mobo in my pc popped in the new 256 ddr ram and hooked up the hard drive , cd rom and floppy, checked the boot options and placed my xp cd in the cd rom . turned it on and it detected the HDD , CD ROM drive & floppy thats what i meant by auto i didn't configure anything on the board , just loaded the safe defaults and booted the system. then loades the drivers ( shown on the bottom of the screen) when all the drivers are loaded .. it just stops responding and the cd rom spins down .. if i reboot it will load the drivers again and stop again it DOES NOT load the files and it does not come to the part where it requests your key.

Colin needs to know what your CD looks like.. what is written on the CD?..
what colour is the CD?.. does it have the word RECOVERY anywhere on it?

I know you are saying that it detected the HDD, but I am not so sure. It is
not behaving that way. That is why I asked what kind of hard drive
controller (IDE, SATA, ATA133) is on the mobo. The question in my mind is
whether Windows needs you to supply a hard drive controller driver diskette
early in the installation. XP does not come with some drivers for SATA,
ATA133, and RAID controllers and if you don't provide the diskette that
comes with the mobo, the installer cannot find the hard drive to start stage
two of the installation.

If that were the case, you would supply the diskette very early on, while a
message appears on the bottom of the screen to press F6 if you have a driver
diskette.

Do you have another computer handy?

What happens if you let it get as far as it can and then remove the cd and
restart? Installers do hang on some machines but if the files are on the
hard drive then the installer may continue after a restart and then ask for
the cd again when it needs it. I doubt that it got that far, but what have
we got to lose?

It sounds like the trouble I had with a Dell 7000 notebook. I had to
upgrade the bios on the MOBO.
