Help needed

I have just been given a PC (complete with keyboard, mouse
etc) that I intend to clean up and give to me two neices
at christmas. However, I have just booted the system up
and, unfortunately, keep getting a fatat exception error
message. As a consequence I am unable to run amything
(including desktop). The system operates windows 98. I
am asking for advice on how to deal with this matter. The
person whom gave me the PC does not have any operating
disks with it as they have been mislaid in their move.
Would I be able to install a new version of Windows 98 on
to the machine from scratch. Bearing in mind I cannot
access a thing. The pc is a low spec (400Mhz & 1.9GB &
256 MB of memory) so I can only run 98 comfortably. The
kids just want one for schooling so do not want to spend
any great amount on it.

Grateful for any help and advice you guys and girls can
offer me.

If you can post the error message exactly, we might have a suggestion.

Otherwise, you can reinstall 98 if you have a 98 CD and CD key. You will
need to boot to the CD and run setup from it.

My personal opinion would be to go to Ebay and get a 10-20 gig HDD and
Windows 98SE should be able to do this for around $50-$75.
400mhz is plenty big enough, with 256meg RAM makes it even better should be
a good machine and 98SE is a good stable OS.
10-20gig HDD would have plenty of room to store any school work they do.

Do you have a Windows 98 emergency disk? If not you can make
or even download one. Use it to test the computer and
examine the system for errors. Without the OS (W98) media
you only have hardware, so before you spend any significant
amount of money, be sure the hardware is worthy of upgrade.
You can find Windows 98 media on the on-line market, you
need to buy a CD. Be sure to buy a retail full install,
else you might have trouble installing it. You should get
more than just a CD, you also need the product key and a
manual should come with it. If you can find a new MS OEM
W98 CD you could format and install that. The W98 emergency
disk should have FDISK so you can repair the hard drive.
If you get a bigger hard drive (20 is probably the smallest
you can find) you might be able to install XP. But remember
you can buy a new Dell for just a few hundred dollars, so
don't get carried away with Christmas urges.
