Help needed - Win2k drivers for 3D RAGE II+ PCI

C

Chris Carr

Hi folks,

I'd been wanting to upgrade an old 2Mb Mach64 video card in an old
(pre-AGP) machine for a long while now. I finally found a 16Mb 3D
RAGEII+, which looks just the ticket. Took it home, tested it in a
newer machine, in Linux - lspci shows the 16Mb RAM, which is the same
as on the BIOS splash screen (the very first thing you see when you
power on).

Put it in its destination machine (old P233-MMX in VXPro board) and
Win2k (SP4) recognises it as a RAGEII+ but swears that it has only 2Mb
RAM! Furthermore, when I go to ati.com and type in the BIOS p/n (as
detected by Win2k in adapter properties), ATI tells me that it's a 3D
CHARGER with 2Mb RAM!

What's going on? The card has 3D RAGEII+ written all over it, so why
it ATI wrongly recognising it's own BIOS p/n? Why is Win2k recognising
the right card but not seeing the full 16Mb? (I'm using the basic
Win2k driver, 5.00.2184 - can't find an updated driver anywhere -
indeed, can't find any reference to "video RAM not recognised").

Very grateful for any help/tips/educated guesses.

Happy xmas,
