[Help needed!] Freeware for zipping many folders separately at once ?

K

klip

Hello,

I am looking for a freeware (or not) that may be able to zip files folders
automatically.
Here is my problem :
I have one big Folder called "Main".
Inside "Main" there are 20 or so folders which contain many differents
folders and files (html pdf xls gif jpg ...etc...).

Each month I have to save the "Main" folder. But I need to zip all the 20
folders inside as a zip file one by one.

So in "Main" there are :
Folder_1.zip
Folder_2.zip
....
Folder_20.zip

I would like to do it at once (whereas 20 times). Note: I don't want to save
the "Main" folder as a "Main.zip" file. (too much a big file for staying on
a CD).

Any help would be appreciated ;-)
Thanks,
Klip

Winxp SP1

That's about as good as it gets.

I think the best approach would be to use PKZip and a batch file.

It's been quite awhile since I viewed this program before adding it to
the archive. If memory serves correctly, I think that you can schedule
each job, ending with a zip of zips with My Own Backup:

http://www.woundedmoon.org/win32/mobv21.html

Once set, I think it will do what you desire without any intervention
at the time (monthly) you have selected.

Someone correct me if I'm thinking of another program, or if you know
of a better program.

Hi,

Thanks to all but it didn't work. ;-(

I have tried :
- "My Own Backup": it can save only all my folders in one big zip file.
;-( [I am already using Syncback for my backup in another hard drive
http://www.syncback.com/]

- "Ultimatezip's menu selection, Tools-->Batch compressor" : cannot save a
folder but only files inside a folder. ;-(

- I am not a specialist of batch file for pkzip. But my 20 folder names are
not always the same. ;-(

Any ideas ?
I had in mind a shell command already added to IZarc.
Example : CTRL+A then left mouse buton, then Izarc menu, then "compress all
folder into separate zip folders". I'll ask its author.

If you go to <alt.msdos.batch> and ask nicely, you may get some help
that would overcome the problem of variable folder names. I've no
doubt there *is* a solution in the batch world, but it may turn out to
require more effort than you want to give it. [Oh, and a word of

Just about any zip program will compress folders and subfolders giving you
the net *effect* that you want since - when unzipped - all folders and
subfolders will be restored to the correct path. Just viewing the zip won't
show the folder structure though. Except for WinRar which does and which
isn't free.

Thanks dadiOH but I already do that in fact more than 20 times each times
("left click , then select foldername.zip" 20 times for several years!)

Thanks Phred. I will do that if the author of IZarc cannot add this feature.

Winxp SP1

From time to time I do what you have described using 2xExplorer (file
manager) and 7-Zip (archive manager somewhat similar to IZarc), first
check IZarc documentation for command line support, if it doesn't
support command line arguments you can download 7-Zip from:
<http://www.7-zip.org/>

and 2xExplorer's homepage is:
<http://netez.com/2xExplorer/>

Now the steps you must follow are:

1.- In 2xExplorer select the folders you want to compress.
2.- Press Control+B to call the batch template or select the menu
'Mark', 'Generate Batch ...'.
3.- Now what exactly you do depends if you are going to use IZarc or
7-Zip:

3.A.- If you are using IZarc then check its documentation :)

3.B.- If you are using 7-Zip then type:

C:\path_to\7z.exe a -tzip "$N.zip" "$N\*" -r

-or-

Cd "$N", C:\path_to\7z.exe a -tzip "../$N.zip" "*" -r, Cd ..

Of course you need to change the path 'C:\path_to\7z.exe' so it
points to the correct location where you installed 7-Zip.

Hope this helps

No, I mean you select the parent folder and then all its files, subfolders
and their files are zipped. One click.

After re-reading your original post a couple of times I understand what you
want...

You *want* 20 separate zip files but want to create them with one click.
And the reason you want 20 separate zips is that the aggregate total would
exceed the capacity of a CD if they were one file.

Is that it? Well, gee, guy...just make one big "Main" zip (one click)
containing all the subfolders/files and split Main.zip to CD size chunks.
Surely your zip program will split? If not there are jillions of file
splitters.

Hi rir3760,

Thank you very much for your help. But I have installed your two freewares
and followed your instructions. And alas It didn't work. ;-(

Here is what I did with a test version of two folders ("1" and "books") with
many files inside. I have put and run the two batch files inside my "Main"
folder.

For your first lign of command :

@echo OFF
REM Created automatically by 2xExplorer
C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe a -tzip "1.zip" "A\*" -r
C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe a -tzip "books.zip" "books\*" -r

For the second lign of command :

@echo OFF
REM Created automatically by 2xExplorer
Cd "A"
C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe a -tzip "../1.zip" "*" -r
Cd ..
Cd "books"
C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe a -tzip "../books.zip" "*" -r
Cd ..

When I run the batch files, it doesn't seem to take several seconds for
taking the time for zipping the files inside my two folders.

I am on Xp-SP1. Maybe it is why it doesn't seem to work?

I have also noticed that when I select my two folders "1" and "books" in
2xeplorer, it says 2 objects selected, 0 bytes in total (note: there are
many MB of data inside).

Many thanks in advance,
Klip

Hi dadiOH,
You *want* 20 separate zip files but want to create them with one click.

That's correct!
And the reason you want 20 separate zips is that the aggregate total would
exceed the capacity of a CD if they were one file.

Well in fact that is not the only reason. In fact I keep all 20 zip because
I need at a later time to make searches on only some of the same
"folder(s)".
For instance, I will make text searches into two zipped folders for several
months : "folder_1" and "folder_18" for August_2002 and March_2003.
So it takes less time to search in only a few zip files than in a bigger
one!

I must also add that if there is a problem inside one zip file (corruption
problem due for instance to a long name file or too much folders inside one
folder or some unknown scandisk errors) I may still be able to have access
to the other zip files.
Is that it? Well, gee, guy...just make one big "Main" zip (one click)
containing all the subfolders/files and split Main.zip to CD size chunks.
Surely your zip program will split? If not there are jillions of file
splitters.

I also appreciated your help. Thanks for the split idea anyway. ;-)

I win :)

QuickZip Backup Replicates an entire directory structure, then compresses
****all files in each directory**** using standard ZIP compression. It is
ideal for backing up to Zip disks. This is an excellent program for backing
up documents, web sites etc. v2.2

Oh...BTW there is no help file, so it will help you to know that you use
the R windowpane for your proposed use of backing up subfolders... Takes a
little playing with but you'll get it. Works like a charm :)

Cheers!

I think the error is caused by the space in 7-Zip's path, try again
but now place the 7-Zip's path between double quotes, I mean use:

"C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" a -tzip "$N.zip" "$N\*" -r

And keep your fingers crossed ;-)

I couldn't resist the temptation of trying your scenario, and it seems to
meet your requirements.

On first opening the program, select "Create Zip Files" from the File
Menu.

In the Left Pane, navigate to the Main Folder.

In the Right Pane, select all sub-folders. The usual Windows selection
tricks apply.

Be sure to check "Separate Zip For Each File" - the word "File" here is
misleading; it applies to the individual entities in the Right Pane - in
this case, Folders.

Select other options as needed, and click on "Zip Now"

These settings will be remembered when you next use the program, making
it very easy to repeat the process.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Dear all persons who responded to me,

Many many thanks for your great help. It was very successful. Be sure that I
really appreciated. ;-)

I have tested all the new 3 freewares. Here is my review :

- The bacth file worked really well [Thanks Rir3760]. Alas my mane folder
change name every month so it is why I prefer "Rip-zip".
I think the error is caused by the space in 7-Zip's path, try again
but now place the 7-Zip's path between double quotes, I mean use:
"C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" a -tzip "$N.zip" "$N\*" -r

- "QuickZip Backup" [Thanks Son of Spy] : Well that's the only one I failed
to use. I had no clue where the file I have zipped were as a result.
Nevermind.

- "Rip-zip" for me it the best of all of them [Thanks Tom McDonald]. Graphic
interface. Can zip and unzip many folders /files at the same time with many
options. It is quite incredible! ;-) Its author even gives a tips for
registring for free! : see bottom of http://harmware.com/downloads.htm (in
fact repeat 10 times registration!). You can also add "rip-zip" to the
windows "send to" menu. This is great! ;-)

Many thanks again to all of you who taken the time to help. I am really
pleased and happy! ;-)
See ya,
Klip
