Help My OE is deeming too many safe attachments unsafe

E

Eoin Lonergan

I downloaded some Microsoft XP / OE patches recently (I
cant remember which ones ) but since then almost all
attachments I receive that are perfectly safe and even
some attachments I myself have created are being removed
as 'OE removed access to the following unsafe
attachments'

Please advise how I can get these attachments and go back
to a more intelligent setting

Eoin Lonergan:
Open Outlook Express. Go to Tools>Options>Security, uncheck "Do not
allow..." and click OK.

Tools-Options, Security Tab
Uncheck "Do Not All Attachments to Be Saved or Opened That Could Potentially
Be a Virus", click OK (This setting is enabled by default with OE6 SP1)

You can now save or open your attachments with the exception of certain
'hard-coded' extensions like EXE files.

I do suggest that you RE-ENABLE the setting afterwards.

For a more permanent solution (depending on the file types you wanted to
open):

Certain extensions are "hard-coded" and no amount of tinkering in the above
KnowledgeBase articles will change that. If the official solutions don't
work, try having the attachment 'zipped'.

And finally, a round-about way of getting at any attachments sent to you no
matter the settings. If Outlook Express tells you that it has a file, but
you can't have it, simply click the Forward button. OE dutifully creates a
forwarded message - and attaches the incoming file to it. Working with the
forwarded message, you can open or save the file to your heart's content.

Greetings --

Outlook Express' default security settings are simply trying to
protect you. OE has no way of telling whether an attachment actually
contains a virus or not, so it temporarily blocks any of those file
types that could potentially contain a virus. In Outlook Express,
Tools > Options > Security, uncheck the "Do not allow attachments to
be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" option, assuming
you trust the source, of course. The wiser course of action, however,
would be to modify your list of unsafe files, as outlined in the KB
articles below:
